Cons: He is very tough to listen to, he will randomly pick people to talk, exams are kind of tough, and the class in almost 3 hours long.
-Multiple extra credit opportunities
- Vernon and TA's care
- Easy Exams
- No Quizzes
- Total point system
- Let out early frequently (especially in recitation)
- Final project and recitation helps a lot
Cons: -The way vernon talks is irritating
- Long class
-Take forever to get exam grade back
- Only three exams so if you do bad it will screw you over
COM 240 was not a hard class at all. There are three exams including the final. The final is cumulative, but a study guide is given (only whats on the study guide is whats on the exams). Everything is really straight forward. I would recommend taking this class. Lectures may be long and boring, but as long as you take good notes with good examples, I do not see why you will not succeed in the class. I had a lot of personal issues going on throughout the past semester and personally did not do well on the first two exams, but once it came to the final and had my head back on straight I did really well. The final project is not time consuming and you can honestly bullshit your way through it. I was out sick during the explanation of the project so I had to work alone and still did not feel as if it was a lot of work, so if you were to work in a group, it will be a breeze. I do not recommend cramming for the exams, Its a lot of information and is selective (but a study guide is given for all three). Exam format: matching, true and false, and multiple choice (usually four choices) Recitations are once a week for almost two hours and can be very helpful especially if you have questions. From what I've read and from my experience, the TA's really do care about the performance of their students. I missed multiple lectures and recitations. Once I gave my doctors notes or notes to excuse me from lecture or recitation, they were very cooperative. Overall, its an easy class, boring but can be interesting.
-Organizational communication is interesting to me so I liked this class although some people find it dry material
-If you have a good TA, that will enhance the class so much (thank you Clare!)
-that being said, make your TA and UTA your best friend because they are really helpful and want you to do well because it makes them look good too
-the class covers interviews, resumes, and cover letters which is awesome for undergrads preparing for career fairs and internships
Cons: -Miller struggled a bit to put concepts into words that make sense to undergrad students because he did research for a long time then came back to teaching
-the project takes way too much time considering how many points it's worth because it requires hours upon hours of group collaboration
It really is a beneficial class with good knowledge for any major to learn. Take advantage of your TA because it will help you. If you study then recommended 5-7 hours then you really should do well on exams. Go to class- extra credit is given quite generously if you do.
recitations are usually short
Cons: material in lectures doesn't always match book
assignments can be ambiguous
exams more difficult than expected
Lectures are long but vernon does his best to keep them interesting and is really nice. His lectures don't match the book a lot of the time so it is really helpful to go to lecture even though there isn't attendance. You have to go to recitations which are usually a short review of the material from class and some type of small activity. The class feels pretty laid back but make sure you study for the exams because they are often worded funny which makes them more difficult.
Cons: kinda disorganized
never reply to emails
overall a nice guy. You should take his class.
Cons: very boring during lectures. Sometimes disorganized. Very boring lectures and tests are very about the most random information and are very hard.
If you study his slides, pay attention in class, and participate often you will do well.
It's one of the most useful class ever in COM.
Many COM classes you learn theories...this one, you learn how to ask good questions, to probe people, to persuade people, performance apprasial, employment interview...etc.
We actually got chances to do a very realistic simulation.
Seriously, every interview involves lots of planning, that's what i learn.
He's a nice person too..super willing to talk with to and work with you
